sports agent, one who represents many superstar clients while securing
them large amounts of money from team-owners and endorsement packages.
At the outset of the story, Jerry has a crisis of conscience that
causes him to stay up all night and write a long mission statement
entitled “The Things We Think and Do Not Say: The Future of Our
Business”, encouraging his company to shift their attitude and focus
on fewer clients and take less money. Shortly after distributing his
memo, he recognizes that he has committed corporate suicide.
Jerry's midnight scribbling causes him to be fired within the
week, thus forcing him to confront the wisdom of his ideals. Only two
other people flock to his camp: Dorothy Boyd (Rene Zellweger), a
secretary and a single mother who fell in love with Jerry, and Rod
Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), a second-tier wide receiver for the
Arizona Cardinals.
Starting a new company isn't easy for Jerry as he lost nearly all
of his clients. Jerry determines to take his one client to the top.
Cuba Gooding, Jr. practically steals the show as the ball player with
a mouth and attitude as big as his heart. Under the influence of his
ennobling new feelings, Jerry helps Rod learn to play from the heart
and not just from the mind and the pocketbook, and Rod's loving family
inspires Jerry to return home to his wife.
The film is often a delight, especially when Cruise and Zellweger
are together on the screen. Tom Cruise plays Maguire with the
earnestness of a man who wants to find greatness and happiness in an
occupation where only success really counts. Rene Zellweger plays a
woman who believes in this guy she loves, and reminds us that true
love is about idealism. Cuba Gooding Jr.’s electric performance
earned him an academy award, Gooding's outbursts, both of temperament
and exhilaration, provide some of the film's most satisfying moments.
